Well, sometimes you can tell. In some species of dragons, the female is smaller and thinner. And usually the female has physical attributes the males lack.

Dragons have reptilian bodies so they most likely have reptilian reproductive organs. This means that unless you want to invade their privacy (i.e. with a probe) there is probably no sure way to tell the difference between a male and a female.

However, even with internal genitalia, the reproductive organs remain pretty much the same as in mammal. For example, male reptiles having two slight bulges behind the cloaca at the base of the tail (due to two additional appendages) while female only have one (or none). However, there is no way to know if this characteristic would be present in dragons since their tail structure is different than reptiles just from the fact that dragons do not have to keep their belly close to the ground and they have a much different posture.

Aside from that, there are other characteristics I consider to be a bit unreliable such as the tail length, the overall size, submissive or dominant behaviors, color and such. These characteristics can help if you have two creatures of different sex standing side to side, but without a reference subject of known gender, you could probably just tell that creature #1 is of gender A while creature #2 is of gender B.

You can tell the gender of a dragon by:
*males will have slightly larger horns thatn females
*females will be larger than males

the way you tell the gender of a dragon is to look in its mouth. females only have venom, acid, shadow, ice, cosmic or plant breath to fight with and males only have fire and metal. or you could just look at the wings and scales males have duller scales and larger wings while females have brighter scales and smaller wings

i have to argue there... how can you possibly "breathe" plants, "cosmic", shadow or metal? Get real!

And besides, how can one really know how to tell a dragon's gender unless they have actually seen one for real?? in my opinion, I think the only way to know for sure is to actually ask the dragon, risking your head getting bitten off beacause it is a very rude question. The gender should not have any effect on the dragon's abilities such as fire or flight. Each dragon will need to fight for its own survival.

sorry kojack for posting on a dead thread but this guy was being silly
