Are dragons reptiles or amphilians? I have read some stories were it has smooth skin that was slimy instead of scales. Or they closely related to birds?( Some have feathers)

There are a few theories on this.

Common Theory 1: Dragons are reptiles, probably in the same category as dinosaurs. They could be warm-blooded or cold blooded, but most likely the former.

Common Theory 2: Dragons are more avian in nature. This is tied to the theory that birds evolved from dinosaurs.

My Theory: Birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects- I believe dragons are a separate Phylum altogether.

If this is true, could it be possible that they started out as repitles or amphilihans and evole into a serpearte speices?

Well every creature did have the same beginning that of bacteria and they all evolved from them just they each became so different from others that we had to classify their differences

In my opinion dragons are a seperate phylum, as Falconer already suggested.

I would not think they are amphibians as we define them. Most of them are "lesser" animals that need to stay wet. They would be closer to reptiles though. Yes, they would have branched off away from them.

Would they be closer related to snakes or lizards?

actually the closet relative would be crocodile. (and no I am not quoting the animal planet's dragon special). The two animals have a striking number of similarities.

I would have to say neither, since both are cold-blooded and powered flight requires an endothermic physiology. If anything, I agree with kroatone, they're closest to crocodiles.

What about the ones that look like snakes?

If they're dragons, then they're in the same family... they may be a separate Class or Order altogether.

and you must remember each type of dragon has it's own adaptations for were it lives for exsaple the chines dragon would have lived in a bambo jungle most likly so it would have to be mor slender than the other dragons to move throu the forest to catch any land-prey

something that has been bothering me is that you guys are using the wrong word, they would be in the same phylum as us and reptiles and birds and all other things that poccess backbones. no what they would have their own section of would be a class. other then that they would be closely related to crocodilesyes
