I highly doubt that they're out in the open. My guess would be either dormant under the Earth's surface or shapeshifted to mingle with humans.

Hey, Ive got that book with Ernest drake guy going on about dragons, its a bit childish but was interesting, and I liked the Frost dragon best. Anyway I dont know where the dragons are hiding but here is some ideas
In the upper atmosphere
Places where people do not venture
Maybe in the sea
And someone once said, strange as it is, that they flew out in Space to find a new planet... I dont think so...

Well I did see one and it looked deserted at the time.....so it probably didn't notice because it was high up in the air....about 90 ft. in the air.

I know they still exist though highly doubt that they ever truely existed on physical plane always on the astral plane. The stories threw history who have seen a dragon if you invstigated it they would also probably recal having an out of body experience. An out of body experience is actually some one unconciously traveling to astral plane, and that is where they would of seen em. The people who can conciously travel there atleast as far as I know rarely talk about it as its an imencely personal experience. Also they would of most likely seen many of the other mythical creatures. All myths have a basis in fact as for the mythical creatures the stories have most likely come from the memories of peple who have been to the astral plane.

I would love to go to the "Astral plane", if it means seeing dragons, but how do you get there?
