Fandoms

Post by alondor »

Hey everyone, I was wondering what fandoms everyone on here is part of? Do we have Trekkies, Whovians, Hogwarts Students, or something else?

I am a major fan of:
Doctor Who,
Harry Potter,
Once Upon a Time,
Eragon
Marvel,
DC,
Star Trek (TNG Especially),
and um, oh right, the obvious one,
DRAGONS

What's the difference between a fandom and just liking something? A sense of community?

That's a really good question, um... well, here is what google gives us:

Fandom (consisting of fan [fanatic] plus the suffix -dom, as in domain) is a term used to refer to a subculture composed of fans characterized by a feeling of empathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest.

So, sense of community.

From what I've seen of my sister's weird-ass passion on the subject, I think the definition of "fandom" goes beyond that. So to answer the original query, no, I cannot say I am a member of any fandoms. With the possible exception of the Browncoats.

It depends on what the meaning of the word fandom, fandom. I mean, is.

I'm a fan of Doctor Who, Firefly, A Song Of Ice And Fire, Marvel [Cinematic Universe], Worm (parahumans), My Little Pony [: Friendship is Magic], Harry Potter [and the Methods of Rationality]... but I suppose the word Fandom goes someway beyond that.

I think the line is where it starts to have effects on your life. So a Harry Potter fan will enjoy the books, and a member of the fandom will queue up in bin liners and cardboard pointy hats to make sure to be one of the first to get hold of the new book...

Perhaps the closest I come to being in a Fandom is the TV Tropes Fandom (for TV Tropes Will Ruin Your Vocabulary), which means I go Meta, I guess... or maybe also the Real Life Superhero Fandom....
Formerly DragonRider. Almost teenage me could have been more imaginative with names.
