Anne McAffery, Dragonriders of Pern. Very good series, plenty of books to keep you going.

Chris Bunch, Dragonmaster. Doesn't portray dragons as spaients, but doesn't treat them bad either.

I think there is a thread like this somewhere but I don't think I'll look for it either.

The Dragonlance novels hold dragons in both good and evil hands. They have a number of writers and don't really feel like finding a list of them right now. I'll find a link later.

Gordon R Dickson was awesome. He wrote teh Dragon Knight series, and it has a very unique perspective.

I quite like the dragon lance books, the legend of Huma, and Kaz the minotaur. I haven't managed to finish Eldest yet, I'm not over enamoured with the eragon books to be honest.

If you don't mind Christian novels, then the Dragons in Our Midst series by Bryan Davis is good.

The Fire Within by Chris D'Lacey is good.

The Dragon Jouster series by Mercedes Lackey was really good and had a really favorable look on dragons... at least as you got farther into the series... because at the beginning a lot of the dragon riders thought of their dragon mounts as mindless creatures but that changes... ok no more spoilers.

Temeraire, by Naomi Novic. Thats the first book, a.k.a His Majesty's Dragon. Theres a few more, but I havent got them. The first book was very good, and I would recomend it, check some reviews on it, and you might be surprised.
